Author Profile
Samirah Steinmeyer

Samirah Steinmeyer is a Mexican-American potter from Tucson, Arizona. She earned a BFA and an MLA from the University of Arizona and worked as a landscape architect before falling in love with clay. She learned the basics of working with clay from her potter/educator mom, Elena. Samirah was raised on both sides of the US-Mexico border and finds inspiration primarily from the geology of the Sky Islands canyon landscapes in the Sonoran Desert, where she is from. Her recent work uses the visual language of her local landscape to capture the poetic tension and harmony between organisms seeking to thrive within fracturing, harsh, and unpredictable environments. Her current passion and curiosity are testing locally gathered ceramic materials, firing rocks into clay, and assessing them for use in glazes. She is beginning to incorporate some of this research into her work on a small scale. She has been selling her work online for over a decade and can be found at samirahsteinmeyer.com and on Instagram @samirahsteinmeyerceramics
