Micah Sweezie

Micah Sweezie is a Chicago-based sculptor and ceramic mold maker from Kalamazoo, Michigan. They are shaped and influenced by dichotomous elements of culture and craft growing up in both Vietnam and America. Micah’s studio practice investigates themes of labor, fragility, and material intelligence to reposition suppressed histories. They received their BFA from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago in the spring of 2022. Micah is also a 2022 recipient of the NCECA Regina Brown and Multicultural Fellowships.

What was most hurtful about this experience wasn't the flurry of remarks disregarding my craft but more so the fact that I recognized that my art and concepts were not accessible to the people they were widely intended for. I believe artwork should have the capacity to be appreciated from many perspectives. Whether it's the craftsmanship, aesthetic beauty, or concept driving the work, there should be many avenues to invite a viewer to engage with the artwork and artist. This month's FREE article.
