I started working with wood ash glazes about twelve years ago because I had an abundant supply from our three wood burning stoves. The use of wood ash in glazes is not a new method as all potters know, but its preparation is often misunderstood and its compatibility with single firing is not widely known. The glaze formulas included in this article are the ones with which I have had the most success for the past ten years. In most of these glazes I have used only elm, birch or hickory as we have a sufficient quantity available to reproduce similar effects. Our best source for hickory ash comes from a small commercial cheese factory where they smoke cheese with hickory sawdust.
