This weekend you can find the entire SP staff at the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts for their annual Salad Days festival! We will be out of the office, taking a road trip up to the midcoast of Maine to catch up with friends, eat amazing food, and celebrate summer and ceramics with the wonderful people of Watershed.
Hosted annually on the second Saturday of July, Salad Days brings together hundreds of people for a pottery-focused summer picnic. Attendees receive one of 500 hand-crafted plates made especially for Salad Days by the 2015 Salad Days artist-in-residence, Liz Hafey. We can't wait to pick out our favorite plate and load it up with a delicious array of local foods – breads, locally sourced salads, and desserts – all prepared by area restaurants and Watershed cooks. And did someone say local beer, too?
For those of you who want to join us there, and haven't yet joined us as an SP member, we are offering a $20 discount on all memberships! I’ll be handing out free back issues of the journal and tote bags to carry around the pots you are sure to buy from Watershed alums and our friends in Objective Clay. Sophie we be happy to tell you more about how her internship with SP and Tandem Ceramics is going (you can help fund our internships buy purchasing a limited edition SP Mug!), and Elenor is excited to answer all your questions about the next issue that publishes next month! Here’s a brief intro:
In the "Function/Architecture" issue Cary Esser walks us thorough the architectural influences on her work; we feature three excerpts of The Red Clay Rambler podcast: interviews with Jacques Kaufmann, Mark Pharis, and the late Nina Hole; Ayumi Horie tells us all about the past, present, and future of Portland’s India Street neighborhood through her Portland Brick Project; former contributor Susan Tunick shows how her work in historical preservation of architectural terra cotta has influenced new work in architectural design with kinetic brick structures; Susan Crowell, Paul Kotula, Marie Woo, Georgette Zirbes, and Debbie Thompson remember Michigan ceramicist John Stephenson; also, articles by Gregory Miller (Denmark), Jonathan Kaplan, Julie Wilson, Steven Kemp (remembering Harry Holl), Paul Mathieu, and David Potter (UK).
Speaking of upcoming issues, we recently announced that the following issue, Volume 45, Number 1, Winter/Spring 2017, will focus on “Women.” This issue is already getting a ton of buzz online and submission inquiries. Plus, rumor has it that next year's summer/fall issue will be guest edited by Martina Lantin! Needless to say, the next two issues are not to be missed. You can renew online here, or contact me, Josh (membership@studiopotter.org), to check on your membership status.
Hope to see you in Maine!
Salad Days is on Saturday July 9th, 2016 from 11AM to 3PM at 19 Brick Hill Road, Newcastle, Maine. To find out more about the history of Salad Days, buy tickets, and more, visit the Watershed website.
